How To Choose A Home Rowing Machine?

Enough Space Should Be Figured Out First

Before spending your money,

you should realize firstly

the importance or necessity

of having enough space that fits exactly

the rowing machine you’re gonna be

purchasing to start your fitness journey.

Just to give you an idea,

the typical size is like a sofa.

You can use that as your reference only

but better if you know the dimension correctly.

You Have To Set Your Budget

have different prices and quality.

You have to know exactly

how much your budget would be

to narrow down your options accordingly.

Consider Where You’re Gonna Use The Home Rowing Machine

it is just fine to choose a rower with any quality.

However, if you plan to use this commercially,

you’ve got to have the one made for heavy-duty!

If you will use this with friends and family,

consider the number who’re gonna use regularly.

If it is more or less ten only,

better go with the “mid-ranged” quality!

“Im 604 and was concerned about how these machines would fit me till I found this model reviewed on youtube by someone who is 605. The machine was simple to put together thanks to the youtube video and so far it works awesome. It is very smooth and would easily fit someone who is 606. Some complaints I read about the hard seat…it is a little hard but I don’t seam to have any issues with it and you can put padding on it if needed. I did have a minor issue with assembly, 2 screw holes did not line up quite right so I took the provided screwdriver and wiggled it in the holes to widen them out a bit and it worked, The screen display is real nice and easy to use. It does take up a lot of room but that is to be expected with any row machine. I have no regrets purchasing it and look forward to using it several times a week to. I would definitely recommend this. Just 3 minutes and I really feel the workout. I have a treadmill, helix machine and elliptical, all great high quality machines that provide great workouts but I can say that this row machine kicks my but much more in a shorter time than the other machines.”

“I was looking at cardio equipment for my basement gym but I wanted something quiet to not wake my wife or baby in the morning. An air bike/rower would be too loud.

After reviewing water rowers and the jaw-dropping prices, I wasn’t sure what to do until I saw this rower from Merax. Unfortunately, the reviews appeared to be from their older model without any real informative feedback. Here’s my initial review:
The shipping was fast and sooner than expected. (4 business days) It was well packed and had no damage from shipping. The assembly was very easy and had well written instructions. It consisted of 4 steps and will take about 30 minutes of actual assembly or 15 with better tools than what’s provided. The rower is made out of steel tubing, including the rail, and feels like it can truly hold the rated limit of 330lbs. (More than most rowers in this price range) It feels very sturdy and is very smooth when rowing. The seat is comfortable and I didn’t find myself readjusting throughout the workout. I like the width and comfort of the handle. I like that it can be stored upright when not in use. Althought the LCD screen feels cheap, it has some good capabilities. During “sleep mode” it displays time, date, and temperature. There’s many modes to program your workout and you can even race the PC. It would be nice if the screen lit up.
I’m not sure how accurate the rowing is or how it compares to other rowers but that was not a concern of mine. The overall appearance of the rower is very nice. Some spotty welds were observed but the finish looks good and overall, a very nice rower. I hope it holds up in the long run”

“I had Concept 2 rower, WaterRower A1 and Sunny & Health SF-RW5856 Rowing machine with a 11lb flywheel.
All of them were very good and I liked them a lot.
But, I sold them all.

Concept 2 was excellent, but the fan was noisy.

WaterRower A1 was good, but a little bit on the noisy side (when the seat was sliding back & forth).

Sunny & Health SF-RW5856 Rowing machine surprised me a big time: it gave me an incredible workout: the 11lb flywheel is the way to go for the future development of magnetic rowing machines. But, the seat was a little bit noisy: the rail was empty inside and that created noise. If they modified the rail (made it aluminum with 6 wheels seat, it would be a winner).

Finally, I bought XTERRA Fitness ERG600W Water Rower on Amazon for $400 (it was on sale).
I immediate realized that my search was over.

This is an incredible rowing machine. It’s almost silent, and the price & warranty blew me away.

NOTE: do NOT put too much water in the tank. Just slightly above the minimum level. In 6-10 min your heart rate will be “above the roof”. If you add too much water, the pull actions becomes too “heavy” at the beginning and this is not good for your muscles. You should experiment with different water levels.

I removed the computer. I realized that I do not need it. I took a kitchen timer with magnets and attached it to the metal frame. I do 5 min of rowing, then 30-40 sec rest. Then another 5 min of rowing, then 30-40 sec rest. I do 3-5 repetitions. Always stretch before and after your workout.

I hope it helps.

Thanks”

“The machine itself is great! I row every morning and the workout is killer! But, the foot pad design is really bad. They slide around and fall out during the workout. I currently have mine duct taped to stay in place.

I would give this a five star rating for everything else…but the footpad design is terrible.

Update: the customer service side of this company is amazing. They’re incredibly helpful and have fast solutions for any problems. I called about the foot pads and the representative sent out a previous models foot pad to try…they worked great! It’s been a cpl months and haven’t had a issue since. I row at least 5000m every morning and haven’t had any other problems. Great rower”

“*read disclosure statement below

The brass tax:
I’ve had this rower now for almost 3 weeks and I LOVE everything about it. I have as much fun on it as the rowers at the gym. The resistance levels are decent. I’m in ok shape and the level 6 right now offers plenty of resistance to get my heart rate up. It’s quiet enough that I can watch videos while I’m on it, and the cloudFitness app has been working great for me so far. I would absolutely recommend this rower over any other magnetic rower. I am so happy I found and purchased this.

research
I’ve been researching rowers for quite some time. I chose to go magnetic because they are quiet, offer a good range of motion, and have a more realistic feel. I’m a dragon boat paddler so I didn’t want the wonky feel from the hydraulic rowers but didn’t want the nose and bulk of the flywheel rowers. I also needed something that would be able to be stored without taking much space. But something sturdy. Yes, this rower is bigger than most hydraulic rowers, but when it folds up, it’s easy to roll it into an out of the way corner. I considered a Kettler rower for a long time but I just don’t like the feel of the hydraulic rowers. Price was a concern but more important to me was quality. When I came across this rower, I was skeptical of the price, but the reviews sounded great, and I LOVE that there are foot petals on the front so you can use it for other exercises.

install and moving
Super easy to put together. I did it myself using the great toolset they send with it.My only challenge was that I put it together on our porch and our floor is completely not flat, so getting the cotter pin aligned required I pick up the shaft in order to get it positioned correctly, but no big deal there. It is not a light machine, but it’s not heavy either. I think the specs say it’s around 60lbs. It’s easy for me to pull out the cotter pin and fold it up. the cotter pin goes back in to make sure it stays up. There are wheels that make it pretty easy to move around. I ended up moving it to the basement and it was easy to take the two sides apart and move them separately by myself.

Bottom line. Great great great.

*Full Consumer Disclosure: Paradigm offers a free heart rate belt or weight scale if customers review their product. The offer did not, in any way change my opinion of this rower”

Worth Noting Before Purchasing

Customer Review: May 28, 2019; Verified Purchase

“During assembly I noticed that the cable for the sensor was pinched which caused the monitor to not read any strokes. I had to re-solder the wire together. Additionally, it does not track “actual” or a calculated distance at all. It only counts strokes, then multiplies strokes multiplied by ten for the distance, no matter how long or hard the stroke is. The difference in tension between minimum and max could be better, making the “extended full body exercise” feature useless for anyone other than a 10 year old girl. The wheels for maneuvering it are quite small and not effective on a padded mat. It has a nylon belt that rubs slightly on the housing, which will wear out the belt. The screw know for storing it is unnecessarily long, making it annoying to fold, and awkward to store the knob. The app is no better than the display. If you are looking only for a rowing workout and not wanting to track your effort or are not worried about durability, this will do fine or you can get another one off amazon for $50 less. Otherwise you should probably spend about $800-1000 on a real rowing machine”

“I’m lazy. Let’s just put that out there first, so you know what you’re dealing with. When it’s hot, humid, rainy, buggy- I don’t want to go outside to exercise. And although I am lucky to have really solid legs (not a humble brag-just the facts), I have inherited my Grandmothers arms. Thanks, Grandma Gert *kiss*… So, I was looking for something that wasn’t expensive but could cover all the bases I needed. Oh, did I mention I like t.v. as well? I do. A lot. And I never have time to watch it. So how was I supposed to avoid the summer swelter, work on those batwings, and binge watch American Princess? THIS ROWING MACHINE! It is simple, effective, and does not break the bank! It allows me to get a great workout (some of my muscles have issued a restraining order) and I have seen improvement in just two weeks. It has a calorie counter and a stroke counter which is all I need. For those of you who may be tall or very strong…the foot pads are a little short. It’s no big deal, I just skootch my sneakers back off the edge a little, no problem…and after a while, the hydraulics loosen a touch- again, no problem for me, but if you are a 6’5 guy who skulled on the Charles River throughout your college career, and you’re looking to regain your former glory, this may be a little rudimentary for you. All in all, it could be one of the best deals I’ve ever gotten on Amazon, and I love it. I got through American Princess ( I highly suggest that as well) and I’m on to Season 3 of Handmaids Tale… my arms should look awesome by the time I find out what shenanigans Aunt Lydia is up to”

“I want to start out by saying for the price, you aren’t going to beat this machine. I got mine for just shy of $80 and it’s definitely worth that.

I’m 5’9″ and I weigh 165 pounds, I have a small apartment which was one of my reasons for getting this machine, along with the price. Personally, it’s just not enough for me as it’s resistance is reliant on a hydraulic piece that once it gets warm, is much too weak for me. My girlfriend is 5’2″ and less than 125 pounds, and it’s perfect for her. She doesn’t have to worry about slamming her knees, and even when it heats up she can put the resistance up to one of the higher settings and it works well for her.

To explain the “warming up” of the hydraulic piece. As you are rowing, it gets warmer and warmer, and the warmer it gets the less resistance you’ll have. So after 5 minutes it gets pretty easy, and after 10 minutes you are basically just doing the motions without much resistance. Personally, I wish I ordered a different machine (and wish I kept everything because I would return it). If you are 5″7′ or shorter, and if you weigh less than 150 pounds, this might be the perfect apartment-sized rowing machine for you.”

“Putting this together…well it’s easy if you’re mechanically inclined, probably have it together within 10 minutes; unless you’re like me when staring at the diagram and putting 2 and 2 together turns it into much longer. Regardless, you shouldn’t need expert set up.
Why I bought this? My hips, butt and thighs have taken over and spread like a virus. Doing squats on my own hurt my knees and the popping was awful. I’m sure my form was horrid, so before I totally messed my knees up I stopped. I have a treadmill but my feet hurt after walking. I’m a mess and needed something to intervene and strengthen muscles. So I am the furthest thing from being fit.
Day 1: I used it without bands, lasted just under 5 minutes before I was feeling it. No clue how many I did as the counter isn’t reliable…it counts as you move or jostle it and then I noticed it skip by 2’s periodically. So I ignore the counter. Then later on in the day I decided to use it again, stupid me put 1 band on out of curiosity, about killed myself…remember not physically fit girl here.
Day 2: Well my knees and feet don’t hurt at all. The top of my thighs, however, are mad at me. Just sitting in the chair/getting back up again is extremely uncomfortable. Using the bathroom…was my toilet always that low? I decided to take the day off and not push my luck and fully cripple myself.
Day 3: Well, the top of my thighs still hurt. It’s like my body enjoys being a potato, but my mind and my clothes do not. Nevertheless, I did get on it and do some.
Day 4: Little discomfort, back on I go. I did notice I have a bruise on my bum…odd, but okay. It doesn’t hurt and I can’t remember if I bumped into something or what so not overly concerned. Anyway, this is the last daily update until day 30, otherwise this would be even more redundant.
Fast forward…from day 5 on I had attached one band and didn’t have any debilitating issues from it like when I first began and started using 2 bands after almost a month.
I found that for me leaving it sit in the middle of the floor and periodically getting on it, doing 20 at a time, worked best since after 20 I’d go do chores or whatever, come back, etc. I do over 100 accumulative squats in one day with this method. I did not use this 7 days a week, instead anywhere from 4-5 days a week depending on what was going on. I find this machine has really helped me be able to exercise and that’s what I was looking for. I wish I had taken tape measurements on day 1 to compare, but I didn’t. All I do know is clothes are fitting looser and I don’t feel like I’m going to split my pants when I go to sit down lol.
I did create a side-by-side picture of my rear one month apart. It wasn’t spectacular to begin with and still needs quite a bit of work, but doesn’t look quite as “wide”, so there’s that. I really debated doing this, but one gal did and that actually helped me to decide, but she started out smallish (compared to me) so I decided to exploit myself to try and maybe help others with a visual.
This won’t give magical results overnight, but at least I’m headed in the right direction

“Easy to assemble and a good (not great) range of motion (I am 6′ tall). Seat rolls on rollers that I feel need a dry lubricant to help them last longer (same stuff you would spray on garage door rollers). Comfortable. I noticed some people complained about the foot straps. maybe they upgraded it, but you have a choice off placing them near the heal of the foot peddles or higher up on the foot. I found that having them closer to the ankle works best. The end of the handles has a flat hand restraint. Wish it was more like a ball; it would be more comfortable to hold for us tall people
Took off a star because after 199 strokes, the piston lost pressure (resistance) and kept randomly losing it for the rest of my workout. Did the same on my next work out. Hope this isn’t the norm and the manufacturere/seller reaches out for a resolution to this.
EDIT: Customer service sent me a new shock/piston. Kudos to them for their fast response, so added a star

“I bought this and Used It for a week. I love it so much my husband decided to give it to his father so he could have a little workout time for his upper body. I immediately ordered another for myself and it came promptly. It does not properly function and it squeaks terribly. I am so sad. I don’t know why one machine was great and the second one a lemon. I am highly disappointed”

“Have had this machine almost a year now. Assembly was relatively simple, instructions adequate. Went together well. Materials are quality as is the design and function, particularly at the cost. After a year of use no issues, still looks and functions as it did day one, motion is smooth and setting tension on the piston easy. Would certainly recommend”

“Loved the quality of this product. Hated feeling like I was rowing on my tip toes. I have short legs and the foot pads were simply too far from the seat. I really wanted to be able to work out my legs as well as my upper body. I have to put my feet on the floor in order to use the rower. I would have sent it back if the box was not damaged in transit

“I bought one of these used from a coworker. I wanted to address the issue of the resistance level, for those who are concerned that level 12 isn’t heavy enough.”
This is not a weight machine, where you do a small number of reps at high resistance, for anaerobic exercise. It is an endurance machine, where you do a high number of reps at low resistance, for aerobic exercise. Think of doing repetitions for 20-60 minutes continuously, which adds up to hundreds of reps. This is simulating rowing with a sliding seat rowing shell, which is a full body motion involving pushing back with the legs, leaning back with the back from the hips, and pulling with the arms; then sweep the arms out and back around to the forward start position. That’s a lot of complex joint motion, stressing knees, back, elbows, hips, and shoulders. You need the resistance to be light enough that doing it repeatedly for hundreds of strokes doesn’t cause injury.
I have a sea kayak and a folding plastic Porta-Bote rowboat. When I take these for an hour-long paddle or row, I like to maintain a regular, steady rhythm. I look for a light resistance that I’ve seen described as pulling through very wet concrete. No single stroke should feel heavy.
In getting used to this machine, I experimented with several different settings for a few strokes, then started at level 5 and worked my way down to the resistance I’m used to with my boats, at the pace and rhythm I’m used to. I settled on level 2.
I rowed for 5 minutes at that resistance and pace to see what the stroke count would be. It came to 101 strokes. So basically 20 strokes per minute. For a 20-minute workout, that’s 400 strokes. For a 60-minute workout, that’s 1200 strokes. That’s a lot of repetitions. The only way to do that safely to avoid muscle or joint injury is to do it at a light resistance.
If you’re doing strokes that are a heavy resistance like lifting a weight each time, you’re going to hurt yourself, probably in the knees, shoulders, or elbows. Really, each individual stroke should be light enough to be almost effortless. It’s not the resistance of individual strokes that gives you a workout, it’s the accumulation of hundreds of them.
I also swim and bike. When I swim for distance, 20-40 laps at a time, I want a light stroke I can keep up all day. Similarly on the bike, through hundreds of pedal cycles, I want a light resistance I can keep up indefinitely. When I want to swim at full bore, I want a power stroke that wears my muscles out in a few laps. On the bike, I basically never want a heavy resistance. If I’m climbing a hill, I dial the gears down to a low gear, so I can maintain essentially the same pedal resistance and pace.
That’s the secret to endurance exercise, which is what this machine is really for. It adds up. But overdoing it with excessive resistance will cause repetitive strain injury that will force you to stop. Then you’re not getting any exercise at all until you’ve healed.
You can certainly do some higher resistance rowing on it, but slow down the pace and do a lower number of strokes, for a shorter time, just 1-2 minutes at a time. That’s more like a weight machine workout. Protect your body as you improve it.
For the most variety, vary the level up down a notch or two for 2-5 minutes at a time. Then it’s more like an interval workout and helps cut down the boredom. But eventually you’ll enjoy the mental focus of a continuous, non-stop row for an hour, where you come off knowing you’ve done something, but with no pain or injury

“This is for beginners only, you will quickly outgrow this machine. I started out on the highest setting ( most resistance) and have no room to move up. It is sturdy and well made, but the weak link in the whole system is the hydraulic cylinder. I believe the frame could handle a much more resistant cylinder.
The seat is great, the handles move freel, the seat slides freely, and I like the rotating footrest, and it will hold the weight – a well built machine. The electronics are cheap. A good clock would be just as useful. The screen is to small and at a crazy angle, not to mention the wording is to small to read.
If you are just trying to have a whole body workout and just need an inexpensive machine, this is it. But if you are looking to improve over time, I don’t think this will do it.”

“Well I took a chance and spent some money on this combo kit. Boy what a surprise.
All I can say this is something you will not regret getting. I paid someone to assemble it. Glad I did. But it is sturdy and really quiet. Does not wobble while working out. Bicycle and rowing mechanisms is perfect. The seat is firm but comfortable. I am still going to get a cushion tho. After a 45 mins your butt does get sore. But it doesn’t take away from the fact that this is a quality exercise apparatus and work every penny.”

“I bought this rower because it served a multitude of purposes with one machine and a small footprint. I really like this machine however, there are a few changes I would make. I’m a very short person (5ft) and so my toes were the only part strapped into the petals while rowing. My feet would frequently slip out. I’m going to place some sandpaper to try to resolve the issue. My second issue with the machine is the beeping which doesn’t seem like a huge thing but it’s kind of annoying and my roommate does not appreciate it. Overall don’t regret the purchase at all.”
